We have annotated several hundred teaching resources cataloged in the National Science Digital Library with spatial concept terms listed below. We have also created a new TeachSpatial collection annotated in the same way. The concept terms were drawn from the U.S.National Science Education Standards (NSES 1996) for topic areas B - Physical Science, C - Life Science, D - Earth and Space Science, as well as from the 1994 U.S. Geography Teaching Standards for grades 9-12. Those standards can be browsed here.

NSDL teaching resources related to "spatial association"

This site, from the U.S. Geological Survey, provides an introduction to the motions of tectonic plates. Descriptions of each of the four types of plate boundaries are presented along with illustrations of the motions associated with each. The site also shows examples of each type of boundary, such as the San Andreas Fault in California.

Tetraspanins are evolutionarily conserved membrane proteins that tend to associate laterally with one another and to cluster dynamically with numerous partner proteins in membrane microdomains. Consequently, members of this family are involved in the coordination of intracellular and intercellular processes, including signal transduction; cell proliferation, adhesion, and migration; cell fusion; and host-parasite interactions.

This United States Geological Survey (USGS) publication discusses the grassland ecosystem with respect to declining bird species. This report is the effort of a number of agencies to develop a strategy for addressing grassland bird information needs. Grasslands are the most imperiled ecosystem worldwide, and birds associated with this ecosystem are on a decline. This report addresses monitoring issues, species in concern, and the effects of habitat and landscape on grassland birds.

This lesson presents an overview of phenomena related to the magnetism of the Sun, in particular to sunspots and their 11-year cycle, solar flares and magnetic disturbances on Earth caused by solar activity. It also reviews briefly the connection between electricity and magnetism. Students will learn facts about the discovery of sunspots, their intense magnetism, and their 11-year cycle. They will be introduced to solar activity associated with sunspots and their cycles, e.g. the abrupt brightenings known as solar flares.

This website provides, in full, a chapter excerpted from the book entitled "Ecosystem Management: Applications for Sustainable Forest and Wildlife Resources" edited by M.S. Boyce and A. Haney, 1997. The hierarchical framework is a regionalization classification and mapping system for stratifying the Earth into progressively smaller areas of increasingly uniform ecological potentials. Ecological types are classified and ecological units are mapped based on associations of those biotic and environmental factors.

In 1849 Snow published a small pamphlet "On the Mode of Communication of Cholera" where he proposed that the "Cholera Poison" reproduced in the human body and was spread through the contamination of food or water. This theory was opposed to the more commonly accepted idea that Cholera, like all diseases, was transmitted through inhalation of contaminated vapors. Although he was awarded for this work, without the technology and knowledge that we have today, Snow had no way to prove his theory.

Discovering a strong association between crime rates and census tracts, Shaw and McKay explored the delinquency problem in inner-city areas in Chicago.
