Finding the Spatial In Order To Teach It
Elements of settlement form design
For Lynch, the fundamental spatial concepts concerning design are revealed by examining the descriptive means and methods of analysis of settlement form. A "two-by-two matrix of elements, classified and quantified by small regions of a settlement space, and with the key cyclical or secular changes indicated by a graphical series or by special symbols, is the essential description of the physical phenomena that I am discussing" (p 352). These are 1) persons acting, 2) persons travelling, 3) adapted spaces and 4) flow facilities.
